Can my car be registered in one state and insured in another?

I’m moving from Michigan to Montana. I know my car insurance needs to be changed to Montana, but do I also need to register my car there?

Congrats on your upcoming move!
While it may seem like a hassle, you are going to need to
register
your car in Montana. All states legally require residents to change their car registration to their new state. In most states, you have 30 days to register your car with the DMV after your move.
There are some exceptions to this, including:
  • Active military members
  • Full-time college students
To register your car in your new state, you likely need the following:
  • Your driver’s license in your new state
  • Your
    car title
    or lease agreement
  • A safety inspection and smog test certificate
