Can malfunctioning spark plugs cause a car not to start?

Lately I’ve been having trouble starting my car. My car is older and I think it has something to do with my spark plugs. Can you help?

One of the most common reasons your car can fail to start is because of degraded spark plugs.
So, can spark plugs cause your car not to start? You bet. The spark plugs work with ignition coils to ignite your engine. When fuel and air enter your ignition chamber, your car’s spark plugs cause a spark that makes them ignite. Without proper functioning spark plugs, you’ll be stuck going nowhere.
Not sure if your spark plugs are damaged? Below are some common indicators that warrants replacing your spark plugs:
  • Spark plug gap has widened
  • Center electrode has changed from a cylindrical rod to a dark bump
  • Ground electrode no longer has square edges
