Can I still have renters insurance even without a lease?

I moved into a gorgeous dream apartment with my boyfriend, but the only catch is only his name is on the lease. I love the new place, but I’m worried that I won’t be able to insure my belongings without a signed lease. Do I need to be on the lease to get renters insurance?

Ooh, a dream apartment! To us, that conjures images of exposed brick, giant loft windows, and a spiral staircase—but to each their own. Congrats to you both on the new space!
The short answer is yes, you can still get renters insurance without a signed lease. There are a couple of scenarios in which you may find yourself living in a rented space without a lease:
  • If you’re a tenant at will This means that you live in a rented space and pay a landlord, but for whatever reason, do not have a signed lease. You can still apply for renters insurance.
  • If your name isn’t on the lease Maybe your roommate or significant other signed for the both of you. In that case, you can still get your own renters insurance to protect your belongings. Or, you can ask them to add you to their policy as an additional insured.
  • If you move in with a family member Any immediate family member (someone related by blood or by marriage) living with the lease signer will most likely be automatically covered by their renters policy.
Now that you’ve got your dream apartment, it’s time to get your dream insurance. Sounds odd, we know, but
