Can I save money as a young driver with a smart driving program?

I recently graduated from college and I'm new to driving, as I didn't bring a car to school. Now that I have a job, I need a car to get to work. I've read about several insurers that have a smart driving program that provides discounts. Is this a good way to save money?

“Several companies have started a smart driving program aimed at beginner drivers and teens. If you sign up for the program, the company gives you a “”reader”” that plugs into your vehicle. This reader then sends information to the insurance company about hard braking, accelerating, and top speed.
After obtaining this information, the insurer then issues a discount based on your driving.
Many companies that have this program offer a five percent to 10% discount just for signing up, and up to a 30% to 40% discount if you’re deemed a safe driver. Some of the most popular smart driving programs are available from these carriers:
