Can I renew my driver’s license online in South Carolina?

I live in Charleston, South Carolina, and my license renewal is quickly creeping up on me. I really don’t want to go to the DMV, though... Is there any way I can renew my driver’s license online?

Waiting in a
Charleston
DMV line is certainly not an ideal way to spend your free time. Fortunately, you are able to renew your
South Carolina
driver’s license online, but only if you didn’t renew online during your last renewal.
There are a few additional requirements for online license renewal, including:
  • Commercial, conditional, and special restricted driver’s licenses must be renewed in person
  • You must be a U.S. citizen
  • You must have no more than five points on
    your South Carolina driving record
    within the last two years
  • You CANNOT be a convicted violent offender
  • Your personal information must match what is already on file
  • Your license CANNOT be expired for more than nine months
If you meet all of these requirements, you can use the South Carolina DMV’s online portal to complete your renewal. You will need a debit or credit card to pay the $25 fee, and you will also need to submit a Certification of Vision Examination.
Once your renewal and vision exam have been successfully processed, your new license will arrive in the mail within 15 days.
With your renewed license in hand, you’ll also want to make sure that you protect yourself on the road with quality insurance. While researching affordable plans might seem as tedious as visiting the DMV,
