Can I renew my driver’s license online in Hawaii?

I’m currently living in Honolulu and I just realized my driver’s license is up for renewal. Is there any way to renew a Hawaii driver’s license online, though? I can’t seem to find the option anywhere and I super don’t want to go to the DMV.

Sitting around a Honolulu DMV is certainly not a desirable way to spend your free time.
Unfortunately, the reason you can’t find a way to renew your Hawaii driver’s license online is because there isn’t an online option currently.
That said, you can renew by mail if you really want to avoid the DMV. But you will only be able to do this two consecutive times before you will need to go to the DMV in person again.
Here’s what you’ll need to do to renew by mail:
  1. Write a letter to your county of residence requesting a driver’s license renewal
  2. Mail or fax this letter to the appropriate address
  3. Once your request is approved, you will receive a renewal packet in the mail or via email
  4. Complete and return the forms in the renewal packet
  5. If you’re under 71 years old, include the $40 renewal fee payment—this fee is usually less if you’re over 71
As a Honolulu resident, you will need to mail your letter and materials to the following address:
Department of Customer Services P.O. Box 30340 Honolulu, HI 96820-0340*
You will need to include in your request:
  • Your name (must match your license)
  • Address
  • License number or last four digits of your Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Email
  • Signature
Once your renewal has been processed, you will receive your new license within four weeks. If it has been more than eight weeks and you still haven’t received your new license, you can call 808-768-9100 and leave a detailed message concerning your situation.
