Can I mix engine oil brands?

I needed to top off my oil and only had a little left in the old bottle so I bought another quart, but I just realized the brands are different—can you mix engine oil brands?

This is a great question! As long as both oils have the same weight (or viscosity) rating as recommended in your owner’s manual, you can theoretically mix engine oil brands without damaging your engine.
While there may be some slight differences across motor oil brands, the base mixture of oil and additives will be more or less the same.
That being said, it is not recommended to mix different types of oil, different weights of oil, or different oil compositions (e.g. full-synthetic with traditional), even within the same brand.
In any case, always proceed with caution when mixing different oil brands and recognize that doing so can potentially lead to a reduction in engine performance and fuel efficiency, but will not damage your engine in the short term.
