Can I insure a commercial vehicle for personal use?

I’m buying a pickup truck for my business, but I also plan to use it as my daily driver. Since it’ll be considered a commercial vehicle, can I still insure it for personal use?

Buying a car for both commercial use and personal use is pretty common, so you have a few options to get your new vehicle properly insured:
  • Buy both a personal car insurance policy and a
    commercial insurance policy
: This may be your best bet to ensure you’re fully covered no matter what happens; however, it can get very expensive very fast.
  • Buy a personal policy and add a commercial designation to your plan: Some insurers offer commercial designations as an add-on, and others allow you to designate specific hours during which your vehicle will be covered for personal or business use.
  • Buy a commercial policy that allows for some personal use: Most commercial policies allow for at least some personal vehicle use, but some have very strict rules about how a commercial vehicle can and can’t be used.
Not every company writes the same types of
car insurance
policies or has the same rules and regulations. That means you’ll need to do some shopping around not only to find the best coverage but also to find the best pricing.
