Can I get flood insurance if I don't live in a high-risk flood zone?

Can I get flood insurance? Or is it only for high-risk flood areas? I live in New York. I don’t think where I live is considered a high-risk flood zone, but we’ve been getting more flooding over the years from hurricanes and other storms.

You can get flood insurance no matter where you live—and it’s a good idea. Even just a little bit of water seeping into your home can cause a lot of damage. Flood insurance will protect you.
You can get flood insurance by talking to your homewowners insurance agent. They may be able to add flood coverage to your existing home insurance policy. If not, they can direct you to another insurance company that offers private flood insurance.
Alternatively, they may direct you to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), NFIP provides federally backed flood insurance to property owners. You can call them directly at 1-800-427-4661.
Making sure your car is covered in the event of a flood is a bit easier. Comprehensive insurance covers natural disasters and water damage. Check with your insurance provider to determine if you have comprehensive coverage; if not, ask to add it on.
If you want to save money on car insurance, the Jerry app is a good place to start. Jerry collects all of your information from your existing insurer. Choose from competitive quotes from up to 50 top insurance companies and Jerry takes care of the rest—securing your new policy. No long forms. No calling around. No hard work. Just savings.”
