Can I get car insurance with an ID card?

The insurance application process seems like a real slog. Can I speed it up by applying with an ID card instead of providing all the other extra info?

“Unfortunately, no, getting
car insurance
isn’t as simple as just handing over an ID card.
Buying insurance can seem like a daunting task, but there are a few ways to make the process go more smoothly.
Whether you are working with an agent on the phone or getting
car insurance quotes online
, make sure the information you provide is correct. Here is a list of items to double-check before you pick up the phone or hit the submit button:
  • Spelling of names on the policy
  • Driver’s license numbers
  • Dates of birth
  • Social Security numbers
  • Policyholder’s address (especially the apartment or unit number)
  • Lienholder’s name and address
The carriers may request some information that they can’t retrieve from public records. If they need proof of prior insurance for a specific time frame, they will need a copy of your declarations page. An ID card won’t suffice since it doesn’t list information like coverages and additional drivers.
It’s also standard to be asked for proof of address and proof of homeownership. All of this information can be sent via email, and it takes just a few days of review time before your policy is issued. “
