Can I get affordable rental car insurance in Mexico?

“Your best bet to save money on Mexican rental insurance is by contacting your credit card company. Credit card companies like American Express and Visa have international rental coverage benefits, so you will want to call them and review the specifics.
If using your credit card benefits isn’t an option, you will need to get coverage directly from a rental car agency.
Where you buy your
rental car insurance
can depend on where you are renting. For example, are you renting the car in Mexico? Or are you renting in America and driving into Mexico?Most American car rental agencies do not offer Mexican car insurance. In addition, some rental companies don’t allow their cars to be driven in other countries, while others charge a higher fee. If they do allow it, you’d need to purchase an insurance policy from a U.S. based Mexican insurance provider.
That said, renting a car from a Mexican rental agency is the most straightforward choice. The rates are comparable to America, but you will benefit from having an agent who understands Mexican car insurance laws.
The rules for American drivers in Mexico are very strict. If you are caught driving without insurance or disobeying a traffic law, you could be sent to jail.
The minimum amount of insurance coverage is:
- 50,000 pesos in property damage
- 100,000 pesos in personal injury expenses”
