Can I drive in Mexico with my US car insurance?

I am taking a day trip to Mexico. Can I use my U.S. car insurance? Since it's such a short trip, I can't imagine getting into an accident.

Even if it’s a day trip, you must have the proper
car insurance
coverage while in Mexico.
Most U.S. car insurance policies do not extend coverage to Mexico because Mexico does not recognize American liability insurance. If your insurance company does offer coverage, it’ll likely be for theft or damage. Some car insurance companies extend coverage if you’re within a certain number of miles of the U.S.-Mexico border.
While it seems unlikely that you would get into an accident, you never know what could happen. Without insurance, you can face thousands of dollars of damage along with jail time until you prove that you can pay for the damage.
Before you leave on your trip, reach out to your car insurance company. They can provide you with a
temporary car insurance
policy or refer you to one of their Mexican insurance partners.
If your insurance company doesn’t offer this type of insurance and you plan to travel often to Mexico, you may want to compare policies from other providers. Some car insurance companies extend coverage if you’re within a certain number of miles of the U.S.-Mexico border. Download the
