Can I drive in Mexico with my US car insurance?

I am taking a day trip to Mexico. Can I use my U.S. car insurance? Since it's such a short trip, I can't imagine getting into an accident.

“Even if it’s a day trip, you must have the proper car insurance coverage while in Mexico.
Most U.S. car insurance policies do not extend coverage to Mexico. This is because Mexico does not recognize American liability insurance. If your insurance company does offer coverage, it’ll likely be for theft or damage. However, some car insurance companies extend coverage if you’re within a certain number of miles of the U.S.-Mexico border.
No one plans to get into an accident, but erring on the side of caution is the smart move. Without insurance, you could face thousands of dollars of damage in an accident. While it seems unlikely that you would get into an accident, you never know what could happen.
Before you leave on your trip, reach out to your car insurance company. They can provide you with temporary car insurance policy or refer you to one of their Mexican insurance partners.
If your insurance company doesn’t offer this type of insurance and you plan to travel regularly to Mexico in the future, you may want to compare policies from other providers. Download the Jerry app to compare quotes from over 50 providers in just minutes.”
