Can I change the owner name on a car insurance policy?

I recently bought a new car and sold my old one to my wife for $1 to officially transfer the title to her. The insurance rate I got on it was very reasonable, and I'd obviously like her to be able to keep it, if possible—so can I change the owner's name from my name to my wife's on my old car's insurance policy?

“Congratulations on the new purchase! That’s definitely a way to think outside the box—but unfortunately, you can’t simply change the owner name on your
car insurance
policy.
Car insurance rates are highly personalized and are based on how much of a risk someone will be to insure. There are several aspects that affect your wife’s rate, including:
  • Age
  • Driving history
  • Credit history
These factors can drastically change her rate compared to yours—which means you’ll need to cancel your old policy and get a new one for your wife.
When you get a new policy, make sure to shop
