Can I cancel my renters insurance policy?

I’m tired of paying so much for my renters insurance; I feel like I don’t even need it and it’s so much money out of my bank account. Can I just cancel my renters insurance?

We get it, paying for something you feel like you don’t use is pretty annoying. Technically, yes, you can cancel your renters insurance policy—but keep in mind that doing so could have more consequences than you think.
Your renters insurance is more than just another bill to pay. It does a whole range of things for you:
  • Protects you and your belongings. This can be from theft, water damage, natural disasters, and even bodily injuries.
  • May be a non-negotiable part of your lease. Some, but not all, landlords may require you to have renters insurance as part of your lease agreement. If that’s the case, canceling your renters insurance could qualify as a breach of your lease contract.
  • Provides peace of mind should things go wrong. Should the worst happen and you find yourself in a tight spot, having insurance can be an invaluable tool to get you through a crisis.
If you think canceling is best for you, contact your insurance to begin that process. Be aware that some insurance providers may stick you with a cancellation fee if you cancel before your policy is up, but they may also refund you if you paid ahead of time.
