Can I appeal to the state for damages If I hit a pothole on a state highway?

Since the highway is public, I'm wondering if the state will pay for the damage to my rims. How should I get reimbursed for the damage?

“Depending on where you live, there is a possibility you can recuperate costs from the state. However, it may be easier to file a claim with your
car insurance
company.
If you have
collision coverage
, your car insurance will cover damage from potholes if the amount is greater than your deductible. If you don’t have collision insurance, you can opt to submit a claim to the state.
Most states offer an online claim form for damage done to your vehicle for things like potholes. That said, you won’t be able to ask both the state and your car insurance company to pay for the damages. You’ll need to decide what the best option is for you based on the cost of repairs.
If you decide to submit a claim to your insurance, your rate could increase. Should that occur, consider shopping around. Every insurance company rates policies differently, so you may be able to find a lower rate with another provider.
