Can health insurance cover medical bills from a car accident?
I was in a car accident and was injured. I have medical bills from the accident. Will my health insurance cover them?
“Being in an accident that causes injuries is a scary experience.
If your car insurance policy has medical payments coverage, this covers some of your medical expenses. If your medical costs exceed this coverage, your health insurance would then kick in.
The same would apply for a not-at-fault accident resulting in injuries. Your own medical payments coverage would apply and then the other party’s bodily injury liability would cover your medical bills. If your costs exceed their limit, your health insurance should cover the rest.
You’ll want to confirm your coverage with both your health insurance and car insurance. Every state and insurance company is different. You may have a clause on your policy stating your health insurance is primary or secondary coverage after an accident.
Most health insurance policies require that your car insurance payout any coverage towards medical bills or expenses before providing coverage when an accident results in injuries, which means you’ll need to submit the bills to your car insurance before your health insurance.
If you find that your car insurance rates increase after your accident, shop around. Rates vary between companies and you may find a better rate elsewhere, even with an accident on your record.
