Can driving cause upper back pain?
I spend a lot of time in the car and have recently noticed some annoying upper back pain. Could it be from driving?

Yikes! While it’s best to consult with a medical professional whenever you’re experiencing unusual pain and tension, you may be correct in assuming that driving is causing upper back pain.
Driving a car involves prolonged sitting, constrained postures, and low-frequency vibrations, all of which can contribute to upper back, lower back, and even neck and shoulder pain. Fortunately, there are some ways you can make your trip more ergonomic.
First, you’ll want to pay attention to your posture. This can involve adjusting your seat, purchasing a lumbar support pillow, and making sure your mirrors and steering wheel are in comfortable positions. Be mindful not to hunch or slouch while driving and to relax your shoulders and arms.
Next, be sure that your car’s ride is as smooth as possible. This will decrease vibrations and lessen the impact of bumps and potholes. Replacing old shocks and tires is simple maintenance that can make a big difference.
You’ll also want to keep stress down, as a tense mind quickly leads to a tense body. Avoid driving in bad weather, stay off major highways during rush hour, and give yourself plenty of time to get from point A to point B. On long trips, be sure to take stretch breaks and trade off driving with a partner if possible.
Finally, since you’re experiencing upper back pain already, try easing the tension with your car’s heated seats or a cold or heat pack. Once again, though, if your upper back pain is quite bothersome, it’s best to seek out medical advice.
