Can dogs travel in rental cars?

I’m renting a car to drive from Chicago to my parent’s lake house in northern Michigan. Can I bring my Welsh Corgi along? Can dogs travel in rental cars?

Lucky you! Northern Michigan is one of the most scenic parts of the country. You’ll be happy to know that most
car rental
companies are happy to have you bring your best friend along on a road trip—as long as you crate your dog and return the car free of pet hair.
Here are some tips for traveling with a dog in a rental car:
  • Purchase or borrow a dog crate. Unless your dog is a registered service animal, she’ll have to be restrained in a crate. This not only keeps you and her safe, but it protects the vehicle from damage.
  • Always remain focused on driving. If your Welsh Corgi begins whining, don’t try to comfort her while driving. Instead, stop. Pullover and see what’s wrong. Attempting to drive while dealing with an upset pet is regarded as distracted driving.
  • Leave enough time to clean out the rental car. Does your Corgi shed? (Yes, she does!) Unless you want to incur a cleaning or valet fee, set aside time to vacuum out your car and clean it before you return it.
Here’s to enjoying your road trip with your best friend!
