Can boat insurance protect my boat from storm damage?

I live in Florida and want to protect my boat. As hurricanes and tropical storms are common, would boat insurance protect it?

“If you live in an area with tropical storms or hurricanes, boat insurance may protect your boat from damage.
Boat insurance usually covers damage from:
  • Flooding
  • Hail
  • Lighning
  • Windstorms
Damage to a boat caused by a hurricane is usually from flooding or wind damage, so it’s likely that boat insurance will cover repairs, as long as it’s not a total loss.
That said, because you are looking for protection from storm damage, be sure to read the policy’s terms and conditions. Some policies may specifically exclude damage from hurricanes and tropical storms, especially if storms are common.
Because Florida faces hurricanes often, many companies exclude hurricane damage from their boat policies unless you add a hurricane plan. This will likely cost more than normal boat insurance, but it will offer your protection in the event of a natural disaster. And let’s be honest–it’s a good idea to get this extra coverage becuase Florida is notorious for its sea-strengthened storms.
Most major insurance companies offer boat insurance, like Allstate and Progressive. You can also reach out to your car insurance company if you’re currently insured and see if they offer boat insurance.
