Can apartment management buy renters insurance for tenants?

"My apartment management plans to increase my rent to cover the cost of renters insurance, which they'll buy for me from a carrier of their choice. But I'd prefer to pick my own insurance company. Can management legally buy renters insurance for me? Can I fight them on this to get a policy on my own?

“I completely understand wanting to have control over a policy set up to cover your personal items. Your ability to decline the coverage may depend on your lease. If you signed a lease saying that renters insurance is required and must be purchased through the rental property, you would need to comply.
If that is not the case, try to work with the management to see why they want a particular carrier, and ask them if they will accept a different policy that matches the limits they are setting up. It could be the case that they are buying group policies and getting them at really low rates to save all the tenants money, or it could be their way of making sure everyone is covered.
