Can an insurance company refuse to insure your home?

I’m looking for a homeowners policy for my first home, but it’s an older home. I’m worried about being denied coverage because I’ve heard older homes are harder to insure. Can an insurance company refuse to insure a home?

Congratulations on buying a home; that’s an exciting milestone!
Unfortunately, you are right, finding
home insurance
for older homes can be a bit tricky. Insurance companies like to protect their financial interests and do not like situations with higher risk levels.
Insurance companies can refuse to insure homes for many reasons, but if you’re denied coverage it usually means there is high risk. High risk means a high probability of insurance claims and therefore higher payouts. The risk for the insurance company is paying out more for your claims than they receive in your insurance premiums.
