Can an F2 visa holder get a driving license?

I’m a Japanese citizen on an F2 visa while my husband attends university in the U.S. I’m wondering—am I eligible to get a driver’s license as an F2 visa holder?

I hope you’re enjoying American life so far! With an F2 visa, you are eligible to obtain a driving license in the States.
You’ll need to present the necessary documentation to the DMV prior to taking the driving test. Be sure to check the DMV website in your state for more details on how to submit this information.
The F2 visa is a temporary permit for the immediate family of an F1 student visa holder. While F2 visa holders are typically not able to obtain a work permit due to not being issued a Social Security number (SSN), they are able to obtain a driver’s license since an SSN is not needed in order to get one.
Keep in mind that the F1 student holder will need to accompany you to the DMV. You’ll also need to bring the following:
  • A valid visa
  • A signed I-20 form
  • Proof of residence
  • Letter of SSN ineligibility
