Can an electric car tow a trailer?

We’ve been thinking about getting an electric car, but we want to make sure that it has the right amount of towing strength. We like to take our kids to the mountains during the summer, and we don’t want our camper to be left stranded on a steep road. Will an electric car be able to tow our trailer?

Nothing will ruin a family camping adventure like being stuck on the side of a dirt road, trailer in tow. Fortunately, there are a handful of electric cars that can tow a trailer.
Still, it’s a great idea to check the exact weight of your trailer and the towing capacity of your car ahead of a big trip. These are a few great options if you’re looking for an electric vehicle (EV) that can haul heavy loads:
  • Tesla Model Y: With a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds, the Tesla Model Y can haul anything from small boats to a pop-up camper.
  • Audi E-Tron Sportback: Like the Tesla, Audi’s E-Tron Sportback can pull about 4,000 pounds, so it will be able to handle most small travel trailers.
  • Rivian R1T: If you need to haul a larger camper or a flatbed trailer, the new Rivian R1T might be your best bet. It tows up to 11,000 pounds (and looks super slick while doing it!).
  • Tesla Cybertruck: Finally, for folks who need some serious power, a Tesla Cybertruck can churn up a mountainside with 14,000 pounds behind it. That puts it in the same class as the Chevy Silverado and Ford F-150, which should be plenty of power.
Keep in mind that EVs, just like gas-powered cars, will lose efficiency when they’re pulling a lot of weight. Even though they might not get as much range, an electric car or truck can still be a great option for towing.
Whether you go for a sleek electric vehicle or a classic gas-guzzler, you’ll want to make sure it’s protected by great insurance. The car insurance comparison super app
