Can a married couple save money by keeping separate insurance policies?

I have a terrible driving record and now that we are married, I am nervous about combining our insurance. I don't want to make his insurance go up. Can we just each keep our own policies? Will keeping my auto policy separate from my husband save us money?

“Even if you have a less than great driving record, you will probably still save money by combining insurance policies with your spouse. It will be in your best interest to have policies quoted both ways.
The rate of your husband’s car insurance will increase when you are part of his policy, but the rate of your car insurance might go down due to his good driving record. A
multi-car discount
can save as much as 25% for both cars and can only be included when both cars are on the same policy. The married discount may save you an additional 10%.
Since you are married, your current insurance company may require you to be listed on each other’s policy even if the cars aren’t.
Not all insurance companies rate driving history the same way, so it might be time to shop for
cheaper car insurance
