Can a dealership require me to finance a car through them?

Can a dealership force me to use their financing? I am looking at buying a car from a local VW dealership and I got pre-approval from my bank to finance the car. When I told the salesman this, he said I would have to finance the car through the dealership.

“This is not usually the case, but it does happen from time to time. If you feel that the dealership is not treating you fairly, you should take your business elsewhere.
However, it might be a mistake not hearing the dealership out before walking away from their financing offer. You might be surprised.”
