Can a child travel on the lap of a parent in a car?

We’re visiting family in Georgia and forgot our car seat at home. Could our seven year old child travel on the lap of a parent in the car? We don’t want to spend extra money on a car seat, but also want to keep our child safe.

I hope you’re enjoying your family visit! While it’s possible to have your child ride on the lap of a parent in some instances, it is
illegal in Georgia
for a child under eight to not use a car or booster seat.
Most states have strict and specific laws regarding children and car seats. Due to their size, children can be seriously injured in a car accident. While it’s understandable you don’t want to spend extra money, you could face fines and driving record points by not properly restraining your child. In some cases, this may be more expensive than purchasing a safety seat.
Since you’re visiting family, try to see if you can borrow a spare car or booster seat. There may also be a local business that rents car seats. Even if you do have to spend the money to purchase a car seat, it’ll be worth your peace of mind and child’s safety.
Another important part of car safety is a great
car insurance
policy. If you’re looking for additional coverage or want to explore your options, try the

app. A licensed broker that offers end-to-end support, the Jerry app gathers affordable quotes, helps you switch plans, and will even cancel your old policy.
