Can a 13 year old legally practice driving?

I have a 13-year-old daughter who’s dying to learn how to drive. I know she has to be 15 to get her learner’s permit, but can she practice driving before she applies for it?

Getting a driver’s license is a big deal for most teenagers and learning how to drive is an exciting time. Regardless of what state you live in, it is not legal to teach a 13-year-old how to drive. For a teen to legally get behind the wheel of a car, they must have a
learner’s permit
. In most states, the minimum age for a learner’s permit is ** 15 or 16**, but in Alaska, Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, and North and South Dakota, you have to be 14.
Although your 13 year old may not be able to get behind the wheel of a car to practice driving, you can teach them road safety so they’re prepared when it comes time to drive. That includes things like:
  • Driving safety
  • Traffic laws
  • Basic car features and functions
  • Car maintenance and responsibility
Regardless of your age, having car insurance that meets minimum state requirements is essential. Insurance premiums for young drivers can be steep, but
