At what age can you start to practice driving?

My son is about to turn 14, and he keeps asking when he’ll be able to start practicing driving. I know he can get a permit when he’s 15, but can he practice driving before that?

Learning how to drive is a big step for teens, so it makes sense that your son would be excited. Most states require drivers to be at least 15 and obtain a legal permit to practice driving, although the rules are different in each state:
  • 9 states allow teens to get a learner’s permit at 14.
  • 33 states allow teens to get a learner’s permit at 15.
  • 9 states require teens to wait until they’re 16 to get their learner’s permit.
Remember that just because your son can get a learner’s permit doesn’t mean he should. If you don’t feel he’s ready to begin learning to drive, you can choose to have him wait.
Whenever your son is ready to begin learning to drive, you’ll need to make sure he’s got car insurance to cover him while he practices. You could just add him to your current policy, or you could take a few seconds to download the free Jerry app to make sure both you and he have the best coverage at the best rate.
Once you download the app, just answer a few quick questions, and Jerry will use your current policy information to compare quotes from over 50 providers and present you with coverage options customized just for you and your needs.
