Are vehicle safety ratings important?

I want to get a new car and have been looking at safety ratings. How much should this factor into my final decision on which car to buy?

“Great question—safety is incredibly important. Safety ratings are something many people forget to look at when purchasing a new car, so it’s good you’re looking into it before purchasing your new car.
If you have several vehicles you’re looking at, look up reviews on them. You can search the year, make, and model of a vehicle to see information relating to the vehicle. Many car sites, like Edmunds and Car and Driver, rate and research vehicles.
You can also search the vehicles through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or NHTSA. Safety ratings are available for most vehicles. It also will detail any safety recalls, manufacturer communications, and consumer complaints.
Since buying a vehicle is a big investment and purchase, you want to be sure you’re getting the best vehicle. Safety features can even reduce your car insurance rates!
