Are there safety ratings for car seats?
I just had my first child. While I’m aware that you aren’t supposed to travel with newborns for at least three months after birth, I want to get a jump-start on finding the safest car seat. Do any organizations have safety ratings for car seats?

Congrats on your first child! Parenting is exhausting work, but getting ahead on your shopping is a smart move. The good news is that there are safety ratings for car seats provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
These ratings are out of five stars and rank car seats on the following criteria:
- Securing the child and ease of use
- Evaluation labels
- Evaluation of instructions
- Vehicle installation features
If you want to start on the right foot, you can also heed the recommendations from the NHTSA:
- Learn the four different types of car seats
- Use the NHTSA’scar seat recommendations based on your child’s age and weight
- Use the NHTSA’s search feature to narrow your search
The NHTSA’s search feature is particularly handy because you can input your child’s age, height, and weight, and the website will give you the best options available. No matter what you find on the NHTSA website, you still need to conduct your research to ensure that you get a highly-rated safety seat.
