Are there points for careless driving in New Jersey?
My daughter is always driving around with her phone in her hand, despite the fact that she has a car with Bluetooth and hands-free texting and music. I’ve told her it’s dangerous, but she keeps doing it. To act as a deterrent, I want to tell her about how points on a license can lead to a license suspension. How many points do you get for careless driving in NJ?

Teens are an odd bunch, and they don’t usually want to listen. But if you tell your daughter that she can get two points on her license in
New Jersey
due to a careless driving ticket, maybe she’ll listen a bit more.While two points may not seem like an issue, your license can be suspended in New Jersey if you accumulate 12 points during a two-year period. The suspension lasts 30 days but increases if the driver gets more points after the fact.
Careless driving can lead to other consequences, as well, including:
- Increased car insurance rates
- An $85 fine
- A higher likelihood of getting into an accident
She can also be potentially ticketed for reckless driving, which carries a criminal misdemeanor charge on top of a ticket.
Hopefully, she learns that careless driving is dangerous. If she doesn’t, her insurance rates may go up exponentially.
