Are there any states that do not require auto insurance?

Is auto insurance or another form of financial responsibility required in all 50 states? I'm moving to a new state and want to know if the insurance laws will change.

Answer
“New Hampshire and Virginia are the only two states that do not require car insurance.
While car insurance is legally optional, if you choose to buy car insurance you have a minimum amount required.
New Hampshire requires:
  • Bodily injury liability coverage per person: $25,000
  • Bodily injury liability coverage per accident: $50,000
  • Property damage liability coverage: $25,000
  • Personal injury protection $1000 for medical expenses only
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage must match your liability limits ($25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident).
New Hampshire still requires drivers to pay for property and bodily damages if they cause a car accident. You can pay for this out of pocket or with your insurance coverage.
For those that can’t afford car insurance, you can opt for the New Hampshire Automobile Insurance Plan.
Virginia requires:
  • Bodily injury liability coverage per person: $25,000
  • Bodily injury liability coverage per accident: $50,000
  • Property damage liability coverage: $20,000
  • Personal injury protection: Optional
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage must match your liability limits
In place of insurance, Virginia drivers can pay the DMV $500 to drive uninsured. However, if you cause an accident, you are financially responsible for any damages.
