Are self-driving cars legal to use in Massachusetts?

Call it a love of sci-fi or just plain, old curiosity, but I’m obsessed with the future of self-driving cars. I currently live in Boston, and I want to know if I’m ever going to be able to take a ride in an automated taxi. I’m not too sure about the legality of it though. In Massachusetts, are self-driving cars legal?

If you’re intrigued about the future of self-driving cars, you’ll be pleased to know that
self-driving cars
are legal in
Massachusetts
.
No laws exist banning any sort of self-driving car on private or public roads. Moreover, Gov. Charlie Baker passed an executive order in 2016 that promotes the testing of self-driving cars.
This executive order states that a professional group organized by the state should:
  • Work with experts on self-driving vehicle safety
  • Make agreements with the government and self-driving car companies
  • Use its findings to promote laws within the Massachusetts legislature
No one’s quite sure when self-driving cars will hit roads permanently, so until then, you’re going to have to wait. But even still, self-driving cars will need to follow
Massachusetts car insurance laws
.
