Are self-driving cars legal in Illinois?

I live in the middle of Chicago. While cabs and Ubers are plentiful, I’m fascinated by the idea of a driverless car picking me up when I need a ride. Lots of stuff in Illinois is highly regulated, so I’m curious if the government is doing the same with automated vehicles. Are self-driving cars legal in Illinois?

Taking a driverless cab on your way to work in Chicago definitely sounds fun. Fortunately, self-driving cars are legal in
Illinois
. In fact, Illinois has only one law on the books regarding self-driving cars:
  • As of August 2017, the Illinois State Legislature enacted a law that permanently banned local jurisdictions and authorities from prohibiting self-driving cars.
Interestingly, Illinois has the 10th-most registered Teslas with Fully Autonomous mode in the country, underscoring the heightened demand for such vehicles.
