Are seat belts required in Vermont?
I took a road trip through New England to see the leaves change recently, and I stopped in Vermont to take some pictures. When I got back in the car, I accidentally forgot to put my seat belt back on. The weird thing was, I drove past an officer, and even though he looked right at me, he didn’t pull me over. Is it legal to ride without a seat belt in Vermont?

There’s nothing more beautiful than the northeastern fall foliage, so I’m sure that was an incredible trip! But be sure to buckle up next time you go, because seat belt use is required in Vermont.
So, why didn’t you get pulled over? It has a little more to do with good choices than good luck, actually. Seat belt violations are a secondary offense in Vermont. That means that even though the officer probably noted your lack of a seat belt, he couldn’t pull you over unless you were committing another infraction at the same time, like speeding or running a stop sign.
If you had been pulled over, you would have been given a fine of $25 if it was your first offense in Vermont, $50 if it was your second citation, and $100 for every seat belt violation after that. Those fines might not seem terribly steep, but they do add up, and they can affect your
