Are radar detectors legal in Florida?

I live along a long stretch of highway north of Miami that’s a notorious speed trap. To avoid a speeding ticket, I was thinking about getting a radar detector. But are they legal in Florida?

Contrary to popular belief, radar detectors are legal in
Florida
. Though the
legality of radar detectors
has been widely debated by the general public, Florida has no law that specifically prohibits them or even radar jammers.
However, Florida law does state that vehicles over 10,000 pounds cannot have a radar detector. But unless you’re a long-haul truck driver or you somehow welded two Hummers together, you should be fine.
Instead of trying to skirt the law, you might want to simply practice some
safe driving habits
and apply some tips that can prevent speeding:
  • Set your cruise control to the speed limit when you’re on the highway.
  • Leave for your destination early.
  • Avoid the temptation to go with the flow of traffic if it’s going well over the speed limit.
  • Don’t street race.
  • Identify speeding triggers, such as music or work stress.
  • Think about the increased cost of insurance and fines due to speeding.
If you can apply just a few of these principles and ideas, you shouldn’t have any problems with the long arm of the law.
