Are Mazdas good first cars?

My son just got his license, and I’m looking to go 50/50 with him on his first car. We’re unsure what to buy. I’m thinking about a Mazda 3. Are Mazdas a good choice for a first car?

Mazdas
are good first cars! They’re incredibly safe, fuel-efficient, and fun to drive.
If you’re considering the
Mazda 3
, here is some information to help make your decision.
Good fuel-efficiency: Mazda 3s are small, mighty, and surprisingly good on gas. While they don’t have class-leading fuel economy, they’re consistently near the top, with an EPA-estimated combined rating that ranges from the mid-20 to mid-30 miles per gallon (depending on the model year and trim).
Strong safety ratings: Mazda is known for its excellent safety ratings, which is important in a first car—and the Mazda 3 passes with flying colors. It’s been a serial winner of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick award since it was first released in 2006.
Super reliable: Reliability is essential when looking for a first car, and Mazdas are notoriously reliable. Consumer Reports ranked Mazda #2 out of 28 automotive brands in its 2021 reliability survey—only behind
Lexus
but ahead of
Toyota
,
Honda
, and
Subaru
.
Other factors that make the Mazda 3 a great first car are:
  • Affordable maintenance
  • Relatively inexpensive insurance
  • Sharp handling
  • Optional all-wheel drive (AWD)
