Are electric or hydrogen fuel-cell cars the future?

I know that electric cars today are made with lithium-ion battery packs, but there seem to be a lot of issues and risks associated with this type of power. Could hydrogen fuel-cell cars eclipse EVs as the car of the future?

While
electric cars
have made considerable gains in the past few years, you’re right that they are not the only gasoline alternative.
Hydrogen as a power source is a very controversial subject in the clean technology sector, but some experts do see it as a potential alternative to electric power.
A fuel cell car functions very similarly to an EC, but instead of a large battery pack, it contains one comparable to the size of hybrid battery packs. There are however several drawbacks to hydrogen power when compared to electrics including:
  • Lack of infrastructure. Hydrogen refueling stations currently only exist in a few major cities in California.
  • Hydrogen is currently very expensive. A typical FCEV holds about 6.5 kgs of hydrogen with a range of 380 miles, which would cost between $63 and 495 to refuel at current hydrogen prices.
Some people believe that while hydrogen power is not a viable option for the personal vehicle segment, it could be very useful in other types of vehicles.
