Are electric cars lighter than other cars?

I've been assuming that electric cars were lighter because they have fewer moving parts, but someone recently suggested they might be heavier. Can you clear this up for me?

Of course, I can clear this up for you. Electric cars are heavier than traditional gas-powered vehicles. The battery packs in an electric vehicle are pretty heavy. So, engineers have had to reinforce the vehicles to carry these heavy batteries, contributing to the car’s overall weight.
A problem with electric vehicles is the distance they travel on a single battery charge. To fix this problem, automakers have made the battery packs larger to store more energy and travel further.
The weight of electric cars has some critical safety implications. Insurance claims statistics suggest that people driving electric cars are safer from impact than people in gas-powered vehicles. But it’s likely bad news for people who get hit by an electric vehicle.
Over time electric cars are expected to get lighter to solve this problem.
