Are electric cars exempt from tolls?

I just bought my first electric car and I’m trying to find out all the ways I can save money because of the purchase. I know the government offers a tax break for EV drivers, but how does it work? Do I still need to pay tolls?

Congrats on buying your first EV! You’re right, governments from the federal and state level offer a variety of electric car incentives. Some states offer discounts on tolls or even waive them altogether. It all depends on where you live. These states have toll discounts or exemptions for EVs:
  • California—EV drivers can apply for the Clean Air Vehicle program which allows them to use HOV and carpool lanes and includes a 15% discount on the I-10 and I-110 Metro ExpressLanes.
  • Georgia—EVs are given alternative fuel license plates which allow drivers to use HOV and High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes without paying a toll.
  • Minnesota—drivers of fully electric vehicles can access a one-time MnPass account credit of $250 to use in toll lanes.
  • New Jersey—EV drivers are eligible for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority’s Green Pass Discount Plan which provides a 10% discount on off-peak New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway toll rates.
  • New York—The state’s new Green Discount Plan gives EV drivers a special green tag for their EZ-Pass window decal. The decal gives them a 10% discount on EZ-Pass rates. Even if you don’t live in one of these five states, you should check out the

’s interactive map of all state policies promoting EV ownership. Brand new policies like the one in New York aren’t listed there, but it’s a pretty extensive database nonetheless. You should also use
