Unfortunately, dirt bikes are usually not street-legal in
Illinois
. That said, there might be a way to convert your bike into a street-legal motorcycle, but it’ll take some work. We’ll cover the basics, but it’s definitely best to reach out to the Illinois DMV
to check your options.First, you’ll need a Class L or Class M permit to legally ride a motorcycle in Illinois. You can find more information on motorcycle licenses
on the DMV website
.Next, you should make sure that your bike has all the proper equipment, like:
- A side-view mirror
- Brakes on both wheels
- Headlights, stoplights, taillights, and a license plate light
- Handgrips
- A muffler
- A horn
