A pedestrian ran in front of my car, and I hit them. What do I do now?

I was just driving down the road, minding my own business, when a pedestrian ran out in front of me, and I hit them. What do I do now?

First, take a breath.
Then, focus on what’s most important—safety:
  • Check on the pedestrian and help them to safety if they’re able to move. If they’re seriously injured and/or unconscious, do not attempt to move them or administer any medical treatment without proper training.
  • Call 911 to get medical help immediately, and call local law enforcement to report the accident.
  • Exchange contact and insurance information with the pedestrian. Be careful not to discuss fault at the scene.
  • Document the scene and the accident. Be sure to get the names and contact information of any witnesses who may have seen the accident.
Once events at the scene of the accident have concluded, it’s time to contact your
car insurance
provider. If necessary, seek professional legal assistance to discuss fault and recourse, as well.
