How many drivers in the U.S. are uninsured?

How many drivers aren't insured in the U.S.? I have a few friends who are driving uninsured to save money. They say it's normal, but it seems irresponsible to me.

“According to the latest data, about 13% of drivers in America are uninsured—and 82% of them stated that this was due to financial hardship.
The number of uninsured drivers tends to change each year. It rises and falls along with the economy, and it varies by state. Florida, for example, tends to have the most uninsured drivers at around 23.8%. Massachusetts, on the other hand, has the fewest at 3.9%.
But no matter where you live, it’s important to make sure you and your family have the best protection in the event of an accident.
While insurance may seem expensive, it’s required for drivers in most states. Penalties for driving without insurance vary, but common consequences include:
  • Fines up to $5,000
  • Suspended driver’s license
  • Community service
  • Suspended vehicle registration
  • Jail time
