When should I replace my Toyota Highlander hybrid battery?

I heard that replacing a hybrid battery is pretty expensive. I already had to replace the 12v battery in my 2016 Toyota Highlander Hybrid this year - should I expect to replace my hybrid battery soon, too? I want to budget correctly.

We love it when car owners plan ahead! The good news is your hybrid battery likely has a bit of time until it needs replacing.**
Toyota Highlander Hybrid
battery replacement isn’t usually needed until sometime after eight years or 100,000 miles, or 10 years or 150,000 miles for 2020 and newer models.**
If your hybrid battery fails before that time, it should still be
covered under warranty
with Toyota. But it’s not uncommon for the battery to last the lifetime of the vehicle.
If your car is experiencing any of the following, it may indicate that the Highlander hybrid battery is approaching the end of its life and needs replacement:
  • Your battery is no longer holding a charge well or isn’t kicking in
  • Your fuel economy is decreasing
  • Your car is making strange sounds
  • Your car feels sluggish or clunky when driving
To maximize the lifespan of your battery, try not to let the charge run fully down, and avoid driving on a battery that’s nearly dead or charging only in quick spurts. Letting your battery fully charge as often as possible keeps it healthy.
