My car's heater stopped working and when I took it to a repair shop the mechanic said I needed a new heater core. I've never heard of a heater core before – what is it?

A heater core is a bit similar to your radiator, except your radiator takes hot coolant from your engine and cools it down again, your heater core takes the hot coolant and uses it to blow heat through your vents when you want your car nice and toasty.
If your car’s heater is blowing cold air, it’s possible your heater core or coolant lines are damaged or malfunctioning. You should check your coolant lines every 6,000 miles to catch any leaks or cracks before you start having any major engine issues.
