Should I rent a car in Barcelona?
My friends and I are taking a week-long trip to Barcelona, but we’re not sure the best way to get around. Should I rent a car in Barcelona?

What a fun friend’s trip abroad! You don’t need to rent a car in Barcelona if you and your friends plan to stay in the city center. Instead, public transit is better, easier, and more convenient when it comes to getting around Barcelona.
Like many European cities, Barcelona has a great, affordable public transportation system that can be a fun travel adventure in itself. You and your friends can take advantage of the metro, tram, bus, or the FGC Railway (Ferrocarriles de la Generalitat) to explore the historic city to see all the top sites.
However, renting a car may be better and more convenient option if you’re staying outside the city center or plan to take additional trips to nearby cities like Madrid or Valencia. You’ll need to meet the following requirements to rent a car in Spain:
- You areat least 21 years old
- You have a valid driver’s license from your home country
- You’ve obtained an International Driving Permit (IDP)
