How do I remove a Honda Pilot gas cap tether?

I keep getting a gas cap warning light on the dashboard of my Honda Pilot, so I bought a replacement. The only problem is that I can’t get the stubborn gas cap tether off. How can I remove the gas cap tether on a Honda Pilot?

Getting a gas cap warning light even when you have the cap is about as annoying as the
check engine light
turning on after maintenance!
Since you already bought a new gas cap (that hopefully solves the issue), use a screwdriver or your fingers to activate the pushpin and release the gas cap tether on your
Honda Pilot
.
Once you activate the pushpin, you should be able to pull the tether free. However, you may need a small flathead screwdriver or small fingers to successfully get the job done.
After removing the old gas cap and tether, use the same connector to snap the new one into place. That’s all there is to it!
While a faulty gas cap is no big deal, you shouldn’t put other parts of your car at risk by having poor insurance coverage. That’s when the
