Why Did the 2020 Aston Martin Vantage Fall Short of the Quality Mark?

background
Aston Martin holds a special place in our hearts. The
luxury car
brand is one of the few car companies that doesn't belong to a larger corporate conglomerate. Not to mention, it is one of the preferred cars of James Bond
In the recently released No Time to Die, 007 can be seen driving a few different Aston Martin models. One that stands out is the Aston Martin Vantage. While Bond is driving a retro Vantage, that got us thinking: What has Aston Martin been doing lately with the Vantage?
While the 2020 Aston Martin Vantage is undoubtedly a beautiful car, it did receive some flack from car critics

Specs of the 2020 Aston Martin Vantage

Underneath the Vantage's hood is a beefy twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8. Oddly enough, this engine was provided by Mercedes-Benz, one of many parts of the Vantage that was outsourced. Nonetheless, the engine produces some impressive power. It generates 503 horsepower and can go from zero to 60 in 3.3 seconds.
Perhaps the oddest thing about the Vantage is that it has an automatic transmission. It's strange to see a high-performance sports car without a stick shift. The premium trim, Vantage AMR, has a 7-speed manual transmission.
One change from prior years is the addition of carbon-ceramic brakes. These brakes can withstand extremely high temperatures and have a longer lifespan than their cast-iron predecessors. These new brakes are also about 53 pounds lighter.

Pros and cons of the 2020 Aston Martin Vantage

Like all Aston Martins, the Vantage has a truly stunning exterior design. It has some beautiful curves, but not to the point of being overdone. The grill is nearly hidden, being draped over by the hood almost like the curtains of an elegant opera hall. While the exterior is gorgeous, the interior has room for improvement.
The inside of the Vantage feels a bit clunky. The bulging circular controls seem to be protruding from the dash like warts. This may be due to the fact that Aston Martin had to import the infotainment system from Volvo, leaving little room for in-house designers to get creative.
Almost everything on the inside is coated with leather. While this is loved by many, some have complained that there is almost too much leather. Too much of anything tends to create diminishing returns.

Is the car worth the cost?

The 2020 Vantage starts at $156,081 as reported by
Car and Driver
. The Vantage AMR goes for $183,081 for those who demand a manual transmission. These costs aren't too crazy given that we're talking about an ultra-luxurious sports car.
But many car critics have pointed out that if you're going to spend that amount of money, you may be better off with a
Porsche Taycan
or the newly electric Mercedes-Benz EQS. While the Vantage would probably win in a race on a winding mountain road, it does have some faults in the comfort category. Poor noise cancellation and uncomfortable seating are common complaints.
