For any smart driver, safety is a top concern when looking to
buy a new car
. This is especially true for drivers with families, who must prioritize safety when choosing a child-friendly vehicle.
With so many new safety features to choose from, it may be difficult to know which car is best. However, a good bet for any safety-conscious car-buyer is the 2022
Honda
Civic—at least according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), which recently proclaimed the Civic a winner of its Top Safety Pick+ award.
In fact, both Honda Civic models, the 2022 Honda Civic sedan and the 2022 Honda Civic hatchback, were recipients of this award—the IIHS’ most prestigious safety prize.
Two 2022 Honda Civic models earned Top Safety Pick+ awards from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Winning a Top Safety Pick award is no small feat

The IIHS gave the 2021 Civic a Top Safety Pick award—which is still good, but a lower ranking than the Top Safety Pick+ award—because the model scored a "poor" rating on one of its headlight systems in the IIHS’s tests. One "poor" rating can make all the difference.
According to the
IIHS
, to win the Top Safety Pick+ award, the model needs to earn a "good" or "acceptable" rating across all headlight systems.
The organization cites further requirements for the award, including scoring "good" ratings in each of the six crashworthiness categories, as the Civic sedan and hatchback both did. These categories are driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, head restraint tests, and moderate overlap front, side, and roof strength, according to the IIHS.
The IIHS adds that top-rated vehicles must come equipped with a front crash prevention system scored as "advanced" or "superior" in terms of both its vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian effectiveness.

The 2022 Honda Civics have a slate of top-notch safety features

As reported by
Autotrader
, the IIHS gave both models crashworthiness ratings of "good" in every category and lauded their family friendly features, such as LATCH child-seat anchors. The 2022 Civic is equipped with several collision-avoidance elements, which scored top "good" ratings, according to the IIHS’s criteria.
This small four-door sedan scored an overall evaluation of "good," as well as "good" ratings on the car’s structure and safety cage, driver restraints and dummy kinematics, and all four metrics of driver injury prevention measures: head and neck, chest, hip and thigh, and lower leg and foot. More specific details of the safety test results can be found on the
IIHS website
.
The 2022 models are rolling out into dealerships and will be available for a starting price of approximately $22,700.

How choosing a safer vehicle can affect your car insurance

Choosing a vehicle with a top safety rating can have a big effect on your
car insurance
—but not necessarily a consistent one.
Some auto insurance companies offer lower rates if you have a vehicle with a top safety rating, since it’s safer to drive and thus less likely to incur or cause damage. Other auto insurers, however, may charge higher insurance prices for a safer car, because safety features can be expensive to maintain and replace when damaged.
That being said, safety is important, no matter the price. If you feel overwhelmed by the high costs of car insurance, don’t sacrifice safety—instead,
