Toyota Stout: The Company's Rarest Truck Was Only Available for 5 Years in the U.S.

Have you ever heard of the
Toyota
Stout? No, it's not another one of those carmaker and food pairings. It's a Toyota truck that was around in the '60s here in the U.S. Widely popular throughout many Asian countries, this workhorse of a truck was only sold for a brief period in the States.
Even though the truck debuted way back in 1954, it stuck around until the late '80s. However, Toyota's boxy half-ton pickup was sold in America for a mere three (or possibly five) years. Nobody seems to know for sure.
The Toyota Stout was only around for a short period in the U.S.

The Toyota Stout made its American debut in 1964

Unfortunately, it wasn't off to a particularly successful start. According to
Jalopnik
, only four people were willing to invest in the new truck. Sales picked up after that first year, but the truck never became popular here.
Toyota even enlarged the cabin slightly to suit buyers of their export trucks. They also offered the truck with either right or left-hand drive to suit local regulations. Those changes probably helped a bit, but the truck still didn’t see much success in America.

Toyota trucks have come a long way since the Stout

The Stout was just the first of many Toyota trucks to hit American shores. Despite its noticeable lack of success here, it was followed fairly quickly by a whole slew of other, increasingly more successful, Toyota trucks.
ToyotaOffRoad
lists the rugged and useful Hilux pickup as next up off the production line (in 1969) with a Long Bed option appearing in 1973. That was followed by the SR5 sport truck version in 1979.
Some of the improvements along the way included four-wheel drive, an Xtracab that offered extra storage, turbocharged engines, and a luxury car feel in a reliable and useful truck. Alas, 1989 saw the end of production for the Toyota Stout. In 1995, Toyota came out with a brand new pickup truck—the Tacoma. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Can you still find a Stout?

Although extremely rare, you can occasionally find the U.S. version of the Toyota Stout for sale. The nice thing is that many of them seem to still be in good running order. Maybe this reliability is part of the reason it was so popular in Asia and Australia for so long. It was in production for 35 years—no doubt many of those trucks are still getting the job done across a wide swath of the world.
You'll have to keep a sharp eye peeled if you want to snag one of these rare gems. Online marketplaces seem to be where most of them are found. You can expect potentially stiff competition if you have your heart set on owning one of these early Toyota trucks.
